Radical Choreography with Asia Pyron
Dialog through dance
Hey Friends,
This week I spoke with Asia Pyron, choreographer and dancer with PYDANCE. We talk about how she got her start, how she engages with an audience on tough subjects, and working as a dancer outside of NYC.
Asia rehearses at Centennial Art Center, so of course we had to visit The Parthenon
On the company she founded while still in college:
PYDANCE is a fun, uplifting, chaotic dance experience for Nashville. We build choreographic productions that engage the audience in a radical point of view.
For PYDANCE’s first Nashville production they performed POOL on the site of Kwame Lillard and Matthew Walker’s 1961 civil rights protest which opposed the segregated pool at Centennial Park. In response to their protest, Nashville closed all their public pools, an act that has still not been reversed.
Living in Nashville, you're never not going to walk on land that is either connected to slavery or the civil rights era, or the Trail of Tears. That's the reality of living in the South.
Asia uses dance to tell these stories and to make them personal and relatable. She also tells stories from her own experiences to bring people in and make space for listening. Using dance to broach difficult topics.
She’s also trying to make dance fun and reach new audiences. At Halloween she did a murder mystery dance that took place over a three course dinner at Lou Nashville and has another collab with Lou in the works.
❤️ What I’m Digging
📺 TV - Albert Brooks: Defending My Life on HBO. The most I’ve ever laughed at a documentary. Truly a visionary, singular voice in comedy.
🏠 Home - Currently loving my Pura diffuser. Their Nest Holiday scent is making it feel like a cozy holiday season in spite of the up and down weather.
🍬 Treat - Making my own pumpkin spice lattes at home. Frothing oat milk and adding cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and agave syrup to my coffee.
